Yeah, I kind of feel like its a little of both. Despite the fears, Rammstein isn't going to be playing Ryan Field anytime soon. Before Toby Keith died, he was my example of the kind of act that would play there, but DMB is a good example. Another one might be Billy Joel or Stevie Nicks. On the other hand, they did approve a lot of smaller events that are not necessarily concerts, something like 60 smaller events. Which while not chaotic like a concert, will probably be a headache for local homeowners. I can imagine things like Marching Band competitions, and so on.
Also, because I'm faculty @ Northwestern, I go to Dillo Day, it's a ton of fun and not really as drug addled as it once was. The kids these days aren't as fun!
Yeah, but those smaller events include daytime things like farmer's markets or children's events. Like a weekly farmer's market for 12 or 16 weeks would be 20+% of those 60 events. These are things that could bring value to the community. Even a marching band competition doesn't sound that terrible to me. The MLCA's fearmongering about "Dillo Day x 3," Riot Fest, and gun shows show a profound misunderstanding of what event promoters would consider before hosting a public event or concert in Evanston. They want to make money, and they have to cater to the audience that's around here.
Yeah, it will be the Ravinia wine and cheese crowd that they are competing for. Agree with you there. But I can see things that bring in a lot of busses being annoying if you live nearby.
Northwestern didn't do themselves any favors though, by being more specific on these things. They left a lot of room for people to be suspicious.

But I don't live anywhere near there, so ???
